Privacy and blocking.

Privacy on out4 is opt-in by default. Your profile is private until you make it public, your tickets and meetups are private until you choose to share, and your precise location is never recorded or surfaced.

Updated May 16, 2026

Default

Default stance: private.

New accounts start with the most-restrictive sane defaults. You opt into more visibility deliberately, not the other way around.

  • Profile visibility: Private — only people you follow back see your activity.
  • Tickets: Private — your purchase history isn't exposed to anyone.
  • Meetups: Invite-only by default.
  • Replay: Private until you set it to friends-only or public.
  • DMs: Open from followers and people you follow; everyone else routes through a message-request queue.

Private

The private-profile toggle.

One switch in Settings → Privacy controls almost everything.

Private profile toggle

Private profileOnly people you follow back can see your activity

When Private is on, your activity feed, interests, attended shows, and meetups are visible only to people you follow back. Your profile shell (handle, display name, avatar) stays visible so a friend can still find you.

When Private is off, the same surfaces become visible to anyone with the URL. Your profile is still not indexed by search engines by default — that's a separate per-account toggle.

Note

Granular overrides
You can override the global toggle for specific surfaces. For example: keep your profile public but make your tickets list private, or keep your tickets public but hide your Replay. Each surface has its own visibility menu.

Public

What's always public, even on a private account.

A small set of fields are always visible. We list them explicitly so there are no surprises.

  • Handle — your @username. Has to be public for anyone to find or follow you.
  • Display name + avatar — what shows up when someone receives a DM request from you or sees your name on an event lineup.
  • Follower / following counts — the numbers, not the actual lists. (The lists themselves are visibility- scoped to your privacy mode.)

Everything else — bio, location, interests, activity feed, tickets, meetups, Replay — respects your privacy settings.

DMs

Who can message you.

Default is conservative — message requests from strangers route to a separate queue.

Who reaches your main inbox

By default: people you follow, plus people who follow you. Their DMs land in your Inbox with a push notification.

Message requests

Anyone outside that set sends a message request, which lands in a separate tab. You can accept (their messages move to your main inbox), decline (they get no notification, but you stop seeing their requests), or ignore (sits in the requests tab indefinitely).

Disable DMs entirely

From Settings → Privacy, you can turn DMs off entirely. People still see your profile but the message button is hidden. Existing conversations stay intact and visible to you, just no new ones.

Location

What out4 does with your location.

Less than you might expect. We use approximate location for nearby-events filtering and never persist your real-time coordinates.

  • What we use it for: Filtering the events feed and the discover map to nearby shows. Default radius is ~25 miles; you can change it in Settings.
  • What we store on your profile: Your home city (Seattle, Portland, etc.) — a short text label, not coordinates. You set this manually in Settings.
  • Realtime location in the mobile app: When you open the discover map, the app asks for foreground location permission and reads your position at Balanced accuracy (roughly city-block / ~100 m, not sub-meter GPS). It's held in-memory for that session to center the map — not persisted on our servers, not tied to your profile. Revoke any time in your phone's Settings → out4 → Location.

Warning

What we don't do
We don't track which venue you're inside, when you arrived, or when you left. We don't share your coordinates with promoters, artists, or other users. The "people who passed each other" concept from the original product brief is not implemented and isn't on the roadmap.

Blocking

Block + report.

From any profile, the more-menu has both actions.

Block

A blocked user can't:

  • See your profile (404s instead of loading)
  • Find you in search
  • Send you DMs or message requests
  • Invite you to meetups
  • See your activity in any feed

They're not notified that they were blocked. From your side, you stop seeing their content as well — their events, meetups, and DMs are filtered out.

Report

For behavior that violates the community guidelines — harassment, spam, impersonation, etc. — use Report. Goes to a queue our team reviews; we follow up on every report. You can report a profile, a specific message, an event, or a meetup.

Note

Reports are confidential
The person you reported doesn't see that you reported them. They might see the consequences of the review (a warning email, a removed listing, a suspended account), but they don't see who reported.
